Nineteenth-Ranked Pirates Begin Conference Play With Three Wins

The nineteenth-ranked Pirates stretched their season record out to 12-3 (2-1 SCAC) last weekend as they traveled to Sherman, Texas to begin conference play in the SCAC West/Central Cross. Coming away with three wins, Southwestern defeated Birmingham-Southern, Millsaps and Rhodes in straight sets before falling to #5 Trinity 0-3.

Freshman setter Christina Nicholls played an important offensive role over the weekend, averaging 12.08 assists per game. Audra Gentry (44 kills) and Danielle Bochat (43 kills) brought home several crucial plays, and Sam Lingamfelter protected the Pirate court with 70 digs over the weekend (5.83 per game). Middle blockers Lindsay Thompson and Lauren Brown added 11 and 8 blocks respectively and combined for 48 kills. Thompson had a team leading .341 hitting percentage while Brown led the way from the service line with 9 aces.

Following the weekend's sets, on September 23 Southwestern moved up two places in the AVCA poll to seventeenth place. The Pirates will continue league play this weekend at the SCAC West/East Cross at Oglethorpe University in Atlanta.
