The No. 4-seeded Southwestern University Pirates swept their first round matchup against No. 5 Washington & Lee University in the opening match of the NCAA Division III Volleyball South Region Championship on Thursday afternoon, taking the Generals by scores of 30-24, 30-21, 30-27. Senior Katy Lukaszewski (Pasadena, TX/Deer Park HS) had a very good match, recording 14 kills with just one error in 30 attempts for a .433 hitting percentage. Sophomore Lauren Brown (Austin, TX/Saint Michael's Academy) also totaled 14 kills with a .407 attack percentage. Senior setter Marie Bruce (Austin, TX/Connally HS) had a match-high 36 assists along with six kills. Samantha Lingamfelter (New Braunfels, TX/New Braunfels HS) had 22 digs in the match while Mandy Smith (Plano, TX/Greenhill HS) had 11. The Pirates move to the round of 32 and will face top-seeded Trinity University on Friday (Nov. 9) at 4:30 pm.
