The Southwestern University women's golf team closed out the first day of the NCAA Division III National Championship in fourth place as the team shot a 48-over par 340 at the El Campeon course in Howey-in-the-Hills, FL on Tuesday (May 8). Sophomore Marisa Mauldin (Utopia, TX/Utopia HS) was the top-finisher for SU, firing off a first round score of 80. She is tied for 12th place with Illinois Wesleyan's Andrea Johanns. Southwestern's next lowest round came from first-year Kristen Davenport (Mansfield, TX/Mansfield HS). Davenport improved from a rough front nine and shot a 12-over par 85, good for a 29th-place tie. Fellow first-year Cody Wallace (Austin, TX/Lake Travis HS) was 14-over with an 87 while sophomore Delilah Dominguez (Bastrop, TX/Bastrop HS) was one stroke behind her with an 88. Wallace closed out day one in a tie for 40th and Dominguez is tied for 47th. Brittni Pine (The Woodlands, TX/The Woodlands HS) is in a 76th-place tie after shooting 93. Defending national champion Methodist College holds a commanding 29 stroke lead with a team score of 303. Rounding out the top five were Gustavus Adolphus College (332), DePauw University (338), Southwestern (340) and Allegheny College (341). Round two is on Wednesday (May 9) with the Pirates' first tee time at 7:30 a.m.
