The SU women's basketball team made close to 50 percent of its shots but could not overcome poor free throw shooting and poor rebounding in a 77-63 defeat at the hands of Hardin-Simmons University on Saturday (Dec. 29) in Georgetown, TX. The lead changed hands multiple times in the first half with the Pirates building a lead as high as eight points when Kelli Hill (Plano, TX/Plano East HS) hit a three-pointer with 9:18 left in the half. A Cowgirl 13-3 run immediately followed and put HSU ahead by five. Southwestern ended up trailing by 10 at halftime. The Pirates did not get any closer in the second half and trailed by as many as 20. Senior Beth Thomas (Houston, TX/Clear Lake HS) was the Pirate to reach double-digits in scoring, totaling 20 points on 8-13 shooting. She was also 4-7 at the free throw line and pulled down a team-high eight rebounds. Thomas was the Pirates' representative on the All-Tournament team. Jessica Hoch (Garden City, TX/Garden City HS), a senior forward, dished out four asists for the Pirates while adding five rebounds and five points. First-year Staley Mullins (Dallas, TX/Bishop Lynch HS) grabbed seven rebounds for Southwestern. The Pirates connected on 23-50 (46 percent) from the field but were just 15-31 (48.4 percent) from the charity stripe. On the boards, the Cowgirls held a 52-35 advantage and had 27 offensive rebounds. SU's record drops to 7-3 on the year while Hardin-Simmons improves to 7-2. The Pirates do not play again until the new year when they travel to Jackson, MS to take on SCAC foe Millsaps College at 6:00 pm.
