#20 UW-Stout too Much for Pirates in Holiday Hoops Classic Championship

The Southwestern University women's basketball team dropped a 73-45 decision to the 20th-ranked University of Wisconsin-Stout Blue Devils on Friday (Dec. 29) in Georgetown, TX in the championship game of the SU Holiday Hoops Classic.

Stout took a quick 3-0 lead before SU built its only lead thanks to a Natasha Azizi (Katy, TX/Cinco Ranch HS) jumper and a Priyanka Kainthla (College Station, TX/A&M Consolidated HS) three-pointer to go up 5-3. The Blue Devils then went on a 13-0 run, gaining a 16-5 lead. Later in the half, UWS used a 12-0 run to go up by 25 for the biggest lead of the half before taking a 43-23 lead at halftime.

The Pirates got as close as 16 in the second stanza at the 16:22 mark thanks to a Beth Thomas (Houston, TX/Clear Lake HS) layup. Late in the second half, with the score at 63-44 in Stout's favor, the Blue Devils outscored SU 10-1 over the final 2:27 to close out the game.

Azizi was the Pirates' top scorer, recording 10 points on 3-6 shooting from the field and 4-5 shooting from the free throw line. The sophomore forward also led the team with five rebounds. Kainthla pitched in nine points, connecting on 3-7 from behind the arc while also adding five assists and two steals.

Junior Jessica Hoch (Garden City, TX/Garden City HS) tied for the game-high with five assists while also adding two steals. Thomas shot 3-6 from the floor and 2-6 from the charity stripe for eight points.

The Blue Devils held a huge advantage on the boards, pulling down 58 rebounds compared to SU's 28. UWS had 23 offensive rebounds and 35 on the defensive end. The Pirates managed to force Stout in to 24 turnovers while committing 23 of their own.

Southwestern will return to action on Friday (Jan. 5) when they resume conference play against Austin College in Sherman, TX at 6:00 p.m.
