On Saturday (Nov. 17), the Southwestern University women's basketball team took down the Eureka College Red Devils by a score of 64-39 and never trailed in the consolation game at the Jean Kilgour Memorial Tournament in Waukesha, WI. Senior Kelli Hill (Plano, TX/Plano East HS) got the scoring started with a layup less than a minute in and the Pirates would not trail in the game. SU built its lead throughout the first period until the Pirates took a 37-13 lead in to the half. In the second period, Southwestern built its lead as high as 37 but the Red Devils managed to pull back within 25 at the end of the game with the score at 64-39. The Pirates' top scorer was junior Jessica Stephenson (Duncanville, TX/Howard Payne University) who totaled 17 points. She was 7-13 from the field and 3-8 from behind the three-point arc. Stephenson also added four rebounds, three steals and two assists. Fellow junior Natasha Azizi (Katy, TX/Cinco Ranch HS) was a perfect 4-4 from teh floor and 1-1 from the charity stripe for nine points. Amanda Gordon (Bellaire, TX/Bellaire HS) recorded a team-high three assists to go along with seven points. First-year Staley Mullins (Dallas, TX/Bishop Lynch HS) had a pair of blocks for the Pirates. Southwestern was 27-62 (43.5 percent) and 6-8 (75 percent) from the free throw line. The Pirates were just 19 percent (4-21) from three-point range. SU forced Eureka in to 34 turnovers while committing 17. Eureka out-rebounded the Pirates, 35 to 26. SU's record now stands at 1-1 for the year as the Pirates prepare to host the Southwestern University/Austin College Classic in Georgetown, TX on Friday (Nov. 23) and Saturday (Nov. 24). Southwestern plays LaGrange College at 3:00 pm on Friday.
