Southwestern Stumbles in Season Opener Loss to Wisconsin-La Crosse

The SU women's basketball team struggled in its first game of the season on Friday (Nov. 16), falling to the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse 42-26 at the Jean Kilgour Memorial Tournament hosted by Carroll College in Waukesha, WI.

The Pirates opened the game leading 3-2 but would not lead the rest of the way. Southwestern trailed by just one, 18-17, at the 5:34 mark in the first half before the Eagles closed the half with nine straight points.

In the second period, the Pirates managed to score just nine points. SU held La Crosse to 15 points but could not get any closer than 12 points in the half.

Junior Natasha Azizi (Katy, TX/Cinco Ranch HS) led the Pirates in scoring with eight points on a 4-7 shooting night. Senior Jessica Hoch (Garden City, TX/Garden City HS) was the team's top rebounder, pulling down six while adding four points. Senior Beth Thomas (Houston, TX/Clear Lake HS) and first-year Staley Mullins (Dallas, TX/Bishop Lynch HS) both had four points.

The Pirates were just 12-45 (26.7 percent) from the field and a woeful 0-11 from beyond the three-point line. The Eagles out-rebounded SU 41-32 and Southwestern turned the ball over 24 times.

The Pirates will face off against Eureka College in the Consolation Game at the Kilgour Tournament in Waukesha at 1:00 pm on Saturday (Nov. 17).
