On Friday (Feb. 29) afternoon at the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference tournament, the SU women's basketball team lost in the opening round to defending national champion DePauw University by a score of 80-50 in Conway, AR. The Pirates trailed 8-6 after first-year Staley Mullins (Dallas, TX/Bishop Lynch HS) made a layup with 11:43 on the clock but never got any closer. DePauw answered with a11-0 run to go up by 13. The Tigers built the lead and headed in to the half with a 35-16 advantage. In the second frame, SU came out strong, getting a pair of three-pointers from senior Kelli Hill (Plano, TX/Plano East HS) to cut the lead to 13. DePauw then went back up and led by 20 with 14:47 left in the game. The Pirates would not get any closer and the game finished with SU in a 30-point hole. Hill was Southwestern's leading scorer as she finished with 14 points on 5-6 shooting. She was 4-5 from three-point range and also tied for the team lead with three rebounds. First-year Molly Mitchell (Houston, TX/Cypress Falls HS) totaled eight points for the Bucs, connecting on just 1-4 from the field but making 5-5 from the free throw line. The Pirates shot just 32.7 percent (17-52) in the game, compared to 53.7 percent (29-54) for DePauw. On the boards, the Tigers held a large 38-22 advantage. SU forced the Tigers in to 17 turnovers but gave the ball away 22 times. Southwestern closes out its season with a 12-14 overall record and a 6-9 mark in the SCAC. DePauw advances in the tournament with a 23-3 record.
