The SU women's basketball team built a 14-point lead at halftime that proved insurmountable as the Pirates defeated the Hendrix College Warriors 71-60 on Saturday (Feb. 17) in Georgetown, TX.

The Pirates never trailed in the game as they went from a 7-7 tie nine minutes in to the game to a 20-9 lead less than four minutes later. SU steadily built its lead and was ahead 35-15 with 2:36 left in the half before taking a 36-22 lead in to the half. Hendrix's Tori Huggins became the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference's all-time leading scorer with a pair of free throws late in the half.

Sophomore Jessica Stephenson (Duncanville, TX/Howard Payne University) made a second-chance jumper to open the half and put SU ahead by 16 before the Warriors scored nine unanswered points to pull within seven. The Pirates managed to keep some distance as a Kelli Hill (Plano, TX/Plano East HS) layup made the score 50-37. Hendrix then put together a 16-4 run to get within one with just over six minutes left. Southwestern was able to pull back away and scored the final six points of the game after leading by five with 1:11 to go.

The Pirates were fueled by junior Jessica Hoch (Garden City, TX/Garden City HS) who scored a career-high 21 points, pulled down six rebounds and also had three steals. She was 6-8 from the field, 2-2 from three-point range and 7-7 from the charity stripe.
