Pirates Undone by Turnovers in 59-58 Loss to Dallas

The SU women's basketball team allowed University of Dallas forward Ana Castillo to make a wide open layup on an inbound play with three seconds to go, putting the Crusaders ahead 59-58 on Monday (Feb. 12) in Georgetown, TX.

The score was tight throughout the game, with the largest lead for either team being four points. SU went ahead 13-9 six minutes in when junior Kelli Hill (Plano, TX/Plano East HS) hit a three-pointer. However, the Crusaders came right back and scored the next seven points to go ahead by three. The lead went back and forth during the half with the Pirates holding a 28-27 lead at the half.

In the second stanza, the Bucs again went ahead by four when junior Jessica Hoch (Garden City, TX/Garden City HS) made a layup in the paint to make the score 33-29. As the half wore on, Dallas went up 54-50 with just over four minutes left to play after a Kelly Robertson three. The Pirates took a 58-57 lead on a pair of Kendal George (Winnie, TX/East Chambers HS) free throws with 21 seconds on the clock. The Crusaders missed a shot but then stole the ball back, missed another jumper but got the offensive rebound and called a timeout with four seconds to go. The ensuing inbound pass to Castillo led to the game winner as the Pirates desperation shot did not come close.

George turned in a 24 point performance for SU, connecting on 8-14 shots and 8-9 from the charity stripe. The senior forward also was credited with three blocks, three rebounds and an assist. Sophomore Jessica Stephenson (Duncanville, TX/Howard Payne University) made four three-pointers in eight attempts to record 12 points for the Bucs.

Junior Beth Thomas (Houston, TX/Clear Lake HS) finished with seven points on 2-3 shooting from the field and 3-4 shooting from the foul line. She also recorded a team-high six rebounds along with two assists. Only six different Southwestern players scored in the contest while 12 different players registered minutes in the game.

The Bucs committed 22 turnovers in the contest. SU out-shot the Crusaders 41.7 percent (20-48) to 29.5 percent (18-61) but allowed Dallas to grab 44 rebounds, 21 of which were on the offensive end. The Pirates only had 35 rebounds themselves. The game saw 16 tied scores and a total of 29 lead changes.

The Pirates host Austin College on Friday (Feb. 16) for Senior Night at 6:00 p.m. in Georgetown, TX.
