George and Azizi Pace SU's Win over Trinity

The Southwestern University women's basketball team avenged its 74-59 loss at Trinity University earlier in the season on Friday (Feb. 9) evening in Georgetown, TX as the Pirates downed the Tigers 69-63.

In the early part of the game, SU held its largest lead of the first half when the Pirates went ahead 11-8 on a Kendal George (Winnie, TX/East Chambers HS) layup less than five minutes in. Trinity regained the lead shortly thereafter and maintained its lead for much of the half. The Tigers took their largest lead of the game with 5:13 on the clock when a pair of Krista Prato Matthews free throws put them ahead by six.

In the second half, TU held its slim lead until the Pirates tied the game at 47 a piece and then took the lead on a Natasha Azizi (Katy, TX/Cinco Ranch HS) jumper at the 9:38 mark. SU built its lead to 59-53 with a Priyanka Kainthla (College Station, TX/A&M Consolidated HS) three-pointer with 5:41 to go. Trinity managed to fight back and tie the game at 61-61 with 1:50 left but Southwestern out-scored the Tigers 8-2 during the remaining time.

George posted her sixth double-double of the season in the game, scoring 21 points and grabbing 11 rebounds. The senior was 7-14 from the floor and connected on 7-10 free throws. She also added a block and a pair of steals on the defensive end. Azizi also turned in a 21 point performance. She hit 8-15 from the field and 5-6 from the charity stripe while also pulling down eight boards and dishing out a team-high four assists.

Kainthla, a senior guard, added three assists and nine points for SU thanks to 3-8 shooting from three-point range. Junior Jessica Hoch (Garden City, TX/Garden City HS) pulled down five rebounds and recorded three assists.

Southwestern shot 36.5 percent in the game, compared to Trinity who shot 43.4 percent. The Pirates dominated the boards, out-rebounding TU 46-35 and SU also forced 21 turnovers. Southwestern connected on 5-22 from behind the three-point arc while the Tigers were just 1-4 from three-point range.

SU is now 12-10 overall this season and 5-7 in the SCAC. Trinity, meanwhile, falls to 14-7 and 8-4 in conference.

The Pirates next host the University of Dallas Crusaders as they step out of Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference play on Monday (Feb. 12) at 6:00 p.m.
