The Southwestern women's basketball team held a halftime lead but fell behind in the second half and could not catch up to Trinity University in the second half as the Pirates lost 67-60 in Georgetown, TX on Friday (Feb. 8) night. The Pirates led for a majority of the first half with their largest lead coming when senior Jessica Hoch (Garden City, TX/Garden City HS) hit a three-pointer just under nine minutes in to the game to put SU ahead 12-7. The game stayed tight and Southwestern led 26-25 at the intermission. Trinity took the lead for good with 13:52 to go but the Pirates were able to get close, cutting the lead to three on a Beth Thomas (Houston, TX/Clear Lake HS) jumper with 2:31 on the clock but the Tigers held off SU for a final score of 67-60. Thomas recorded her first career double-double, scoring 10 points and pulling down a team-high 11 rebounds to match a career-high. The senior was 5-7 from the floor. Junior Natasha Azizi (Katy, TX/Cinco Ranch HS) pitched in 10 points and eight boards. First-year Staley Mullins (Dallas, TX/Bishop Lynch HS) tied career-highs in both points and blocked shots with 10 and three. Amanda Gordon (Houston, TX/Bellaire HS) was the Pirates' leading scorer with 11 points on 2-4 shooting. The senior was a perfect 6-6 from the charity stripe. Hoch ended the night with seven points and eight rebounds. The Pirates scored exactly half of their points in the paint and held a 49-47 advantage in rebounds. As a team, Southwestern shot 32.8 percent (22-67) from the field and just 17.4 percent (4-23) from three-point range. The Pirates fall to .500 on the season with a 10-10 record overall and a 4-7 mark in the conference. Trinity, meanwhile, now stands at 14-5, 9-2. SU steps out of SCAC play as the Pirates host the University of Dallas on Sunday (Feb. 10) at 3:00 pm for "Think Pink," a nationwide effort to raise breast cancer awareness.
