Four Pirates Reach Double-Digits in Loss at Rhodes

The SU women's basketball team lost to the Rhodes College Lynx for the second time this season as the Pirates fell by a score of 82-74 on Saturday (Feb. 3) evening in Memphis, TN.

The score remained tight throughout the first half of play with Rhodes taking a 15-11 lead less than eight minutes into the half before the Pirates used a 9-0 run, that included a pair of Natasha Azizi (Katy, TX/Cinco Ranch HS) baskets, to go ahead 20-15. The five point lead would be the largest of the game for Southwestern. The score went back and forth with seven ties and 14 lead changes. The Lynx took a 34-31 lead in to the half.

Rhodes maintained the lead as the second half wore on, extending the lead to eight on multiple occasions. SU managed to claw its way back within one point with 8:18 to go after a Kendal George (Winnie, TX/East Chambers HS) jumper in the paint to make the score 60-59. The Lynx pulled back away and held their largest lead of the game when Becky Atnip hit a pair of free throws to go ahead by 10 with just under three minutes to go. Rhodes rolled the rest of the way to the eight point victory.

George scored a game-high 23 points thanks to 7-15 shooting from the floor and 9-10 from the foul line. She also grabbed five rebounds in the contest. Azizi, a sophomore forward, posted a double-double with 19 points and 10 rebounds. She was 11-12 from the charity stripe and 4-11 from the field.

Sophomore Jessica Stephenson (Duncanville, TX/Howard Payne University) and junior Kelli Hill (Plano, TX/Plano East HS) both added 11 for the Bucs. Stephenson was 4-11, 3-8 from three-point range while Hill was 3-6 and 2-3 from beyond the arc. Junior Jessica Hoch (Garden City, TX/Garden City HS) dished out four assists and pulled down five rebounds.

Southwestern shot 38.2 percent (21-55) in the game while allowing Rhodes to shoot 45.3 percent (24-53). The Pirates held a 38-32 advantage on the boards and pulled down 14 offensive rebounds. Both teams turned the ball over 14 times.

The loss runs the Pirates' record to 11-10 for the season and 4-7 in Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference action. Rhodes, meanwhile, improves to 13-8 overall and 5-6 in conference.

Southwestern next faces off against rival Trinity University of Friday (Feb. 9) in Georgetown, TX at 6:00 p.m.
