Southwestern University senior Kendal George (Winnie, TX/East Chambers HS) became the Pirates first ever 1,000 point scorer on Friday (Jan. 26) in the Pirates 83-68 loss to the Oglethorpe University Stormy Petrels in Georgetown, TX. George started the game with 987 career points, just 13 shy of the 1,000 point mark. She then scored the historic basket with 2:22 left in the first half. George hit a jumper with an assist from sophomore Jessica Stephenson (Duncanville, TX/Howard Payne University). The Pirates held their largest lead of the game in the early-going when they took a 7-2 lead on a Stephenson three-pointer less than three minutes in to the game. The score remained close and the final tie of the game came with 13:01 on the clock and the teams knotted at 13-13. OU then strung together 12 straight points to take a 25-13 lead. Southwestern entered the half trailing 48-33. The second half started much the same way, with Oglethorpe extending its lead as high as 25 points. OU held a 68-43 lead before the Pirates put together a 16-2 run to cut the Stormy Petrels lead to 11. Southwestern failed to get any closer as OU closed out the game leading by 15. George finished with 24 for SU on 11-17 shooting. She also led the team with eight rebounds and recorded a game-high four steals. Senior Priyanka Kainthla (College Station, TX/A&M Consolidated HS) added nine points thanks to 3-6 shooting from three-point range. Kainthla also added five assists for the Pirates. Junior Amanda Gordon (Houston, TX/Bellaire HS) also had nine, thanks to 2-5 shooting, 4-4 from the free throw line, while adding four rebounds and three steals. Jessica Hoch (Garden City, TX/Garden City HS) pulled down four boards and scored eight points in the game. The Pirates were out-shot 46.8 percent (29-62) to 37.9 percent (25-66). Oglethorpe also shot 45 percent (9-20) from beyond the three-point arc. The two teams were even on the boards, pulling down 39 rebounds each. SU turned the ball over 22 times while forcing 20 turnovers by the Stormy Petrels. Southwestern's record drops to 9-9 overall, 2-6 in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference. Oglethorpe won its 12th straight game and improved its record to 14-4, 6-1 in the SCAC. The Pirates continue their homestand on Sunday (Jan. 28) when they host the Sewanee Tigers for another conference tilt at 2:00 p.m. in Georgetown, TX. SU Sports Information |
