SU Struggles on the Road at #10 DePauw

The Southwestern University women's basketball team was no match for the 10th-ranked DePauw University Tigers on Saturday (Jan. 20) evening in Greencastle, IN as the Pirates fell, 69-48.

The Pirates tied the game at 2-2 in the first 1:15 of the game before falling behind for good. SU struggled to make baskets in the half, totaling just 13 points. The Pirates pulled to within eight at the 4:16 mark before allowing a 10-0 run by DePauw to end the half.

Southwestern could not get its deficit back to single digits in the second half. The Tigers extended their lead to as many as 27 points with 6:41 to go. SU managed to get within 20 again before the final score of 69-48.

Senior Kendal George (Winnie, TX/East Chambers HS) scored a team-high 12 points, connecting on 6-14 from the field. George now has scored 987 career points, 13 shy of becoming Southwestern's first player on the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference 1,000 Point Scorer's List.

Sophomore Natasha Azizi (Katy, TX/Cinco Ranch HS) added 10 points for the Bucs and also recorded a pair of blocks. Junior Amanda Gordon (Houston, TX/Bellaire HS) led the team with six rebounds

DePauw held a huge advantage on the boards, out-rebounding the Pirates 48-28. Southwestern made 20-57 field goals for a 35.1 shooting percentage while DU shot 43.6 percent from the floor.

Southwestern's record drops to 9-8 overall and 2-5 in the SCAC. The Tigers, an Elite Eight team from last year, improved to 16-2 on the year and 6-1 in conference play.

The Pirates return home for their next conference game as they host the Oglethorpe University Stormy Petrels in Georgetown, TX on Friday (Jan. 26) at 6:00 p.m.
