The SU men's soccer team had three student-athletes selected to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District First Team on Thursday (Nov. 1) for their performance in the classroom as well as on the field. Senior midfielder Cory Fujimoto (San Antonio, TX/Reagan HS) was selected with a 3.95 grade point average while majoring in mathematics. He has scored one goal and has one assist this season while also making his presence felt defensively. Fujimoto has helped the Pirates to a 12-5-2 record and a current second place standing the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference. Junior defender Kevin O'Neil (San Antonio, TX/Churchill HS), a physics and business major with a 4.0 gpa, was one of four defenders honored. He has played tremendous defense all season, helping to anchor the Pirates back line with the team allowing just 15 goals all year. O'Neil also has a goal and an assist this season. Junior forward Josh Spencer (Huntsville, TX/Huntsville HS) was the third selection with a 3.86 gpa while majoring in economics. Spencer leads Southwestern in scoring this season with 10 goals. His 21 total points are also tops on the team. Spencer is also tied for third in the conference in goals scored. Southwestern is in District 6 which includes schools in Texas, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Louisiana, Arkansas and Mississippi. SU is also a part of the College Division of the district which includes all non-NCAA Division I institutions in those states. The first team selection for all three of these players makes them eligible to be selected to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America team that will be announced on November 19. Voting for the All-District and All-America teams is done by the College Sports Information Directors of the America.
