Men's Golf Gains Ground but Remains in Sixth after Day Two

On Saturday (Apr. 26), the Southwestern men's golf team shot the second-lowest team round of the tournament but remains in sixth place overall with one round left to play.

First-year Stephen Gehring (College Station, TX/A&M Consolidated HS) was the biggest mover after day two, shooting the lowest round of the tournament yet, with a 70. He is tied for second with a 155 (85-70), one stroke out of the lead. Ricky Jones (St. Louis, MO/Eureka HS) is tied for eighth with a two-round tally of 158 (80-78).

Tied for 30th is junior Tyler Russell (Cypress, TX/Cy-Fair HS) who has a score of 170 (89-81) through two rounds. Xan Erwin (Austin, TX/Westwood HS) is tied with Russell, also with a 170 (88-82). Philip Thompson (Utopia, TX/Utopia HS) has a 171 (83-88) through two rounds and sits in 34th.

The Pirates shot a 311 as a team in the second round, the second-lowest single round total of any team aside from tournament leader Oglethorpe University who shot a 308. Southwestern now has a total of 647 (336-311) for the tournament.

The final round commences on Sunday (Apr. 27) in Danville, IN with the winner gaining an automatic bid to the NCAA Division III National Championship.
