This past weekend saw the Southwestern University men's golf team placed 17th at the Jekyll Island Collegiate Invitational in Jekyll Island, GA after sitting in a time for 24th after the first day of competition. The Pirates shot a 939 as a team and finished two strokes behind SCAC foe Trinity University. SU lowered its team score each round, going from 321 on the first day to 310 on day two and 308 in the final round. Methodist University won the event with an 871. Sophomore Ricky Jones (St. Louis, MO/Eureka HS) led the Pirates with a 227 (74-81-72) for a 27th-place tie. Next for Southwestern was first-year Stephen Gehring (College Station, TX/A&M Consolidated HS) who tied for 46th with a three-round total of 230 (77-75-78). Philip Thompson (Utopia, TX/Utopia HS) shot a 237 (83-75-79) to come in tied for 75th while junior Xan Erwin (Austin, TX/Westwood HS) tied for 109th with a 245 (87-79-79). Tim Decker (Colleyville, TX/Grapevine HS), a first-year, finished 132nd with a three-round tally of 259 (93-84-82). The Pirates will host their next tournament with the West Region Invitational taking place in Georgetown, TX on Monday (Apr. 7) and Tuesday (Apr. 8) at Berry Creek Country Club.
