The SU men's golf team closed out its first spring tournament in 12th place at the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor Spring Invitational on Tuesday (Feb. 26). The Pirates' best performance came from junior Xan Erwin (Austin, TX/Westwood HS), playing as an individual, who tied for 19th with a two-round score of 162 (80-82). In a tie for 28th was first-year Stephen Gehring (College Station, TX/A&M Consolidated HS) who shot 165 (82-83). Sophomore Ricky Jones (St. Louis, MO/Eureka HS) posted a two-round tally of 167 (84-83), putting him in a tie for 35th. Philip Thompson (Utopia, TX/Utopia HS) tied for 50th with a total score of 175 (87-88). Tyler Russell (Cypress, TX/Cy-Fair HS) shot 196 (89-107) and JK Harrison (Las Cruces, NM/Las Cruces HS) shot 201 (98-103), finishing in 77th and 79th, respectively. Other players playing as individuals were Tim Decker (Colleyville, TX/Grapevine HS), with a 172 (80-92) for 46th, and Connor McMindes (Hurst, TX/Abilene Christian University) who tied for 65th with a 182 (91-91). The Pirates dropped one spot from the first day when they were tied for 11th. As a team, SU shot 699 (342-357) over two rounds. The tournament was won by the University of Texas at Tyler with a two-round score of 625. Southwestern will return to action on March 21 when the Pirates travel to Jekyll Island, GA for the Golden Isle Invitational, a three day event.
