Pirates Lose Third-Straight in San Antonio

After winning the series opener, the SU baseball team has lost three in a row to Trinity University in San Antonio, TX with the Pirates dropping the series finale 15-11 on Saturday (Feb. 22).

Southwestern opened the game with four hits to chase the Tiger starter from the game with no outs recorded. Landon Durham (Pearland, TX/Pearland HS) led off with a double, followed by an RBI single from Richard Falcone (Houston, TX/Westside HS) and then a two-run homer off the bat of Michael Murphy (Houston, TX/Austin HS). Blake Williams (Lufkin, TX/Lufkin HS) then singled to chase Drew Bignall from the game. The Pirates got a pair of RBI singles from Murphy and Kyle Belski (Missouri City, TX/Dulles HS) in the second to make it 5-0.

Trinity got a home run in the bottom half of the inning to make it 5-1 and the Tigers cut the lead even more with a two-run home run in the third. TU then tied the game in the fourth but the Bucs answered with an RBI groundout from Falcone for a slim 6-5 lead. The Pirates made it 7-5 when Mark Noggle (Houston, TX/Clear Lake HS) plated Williams with a ground ball to short in the sixth. Southwestern gave up two more home runs in the bottom of the sixth, both with two outs, to fall behind 9-7.

Two more runs in the seventh pushed the score to 11-7. The Pirates managed to pull within one as runs came as a result of a Jamie Herrmann (Houston, TX/Westside HS) double and a Brent McMullen (Irving, TX/Nimitz HS) single. The Tigers put it out of reach in the eighth with four runs on three hits and one costly error. SU put up a single run in the ninth for the 15-11 final

Every Pirate starter had at least one hit and the team was led by McMullen and Murphy who had three hits a piece. McMullen did it in four at bats and had two doubles. The junior drove in two runs and scored once. Murphy was 3-6 with two runs scored and three runs batted in. Falcone had a pair of hit in five at bats with two runs scored and two RBI.

The Pirates now own an 11-15 season record and are 1-3 after their first conference weekend.

Southwestern travels to Jackson, MS for a four-game series with Millsaps College from Friday (Mar. 28) through Sunday (Mar. 30).
