The Southwestern University baseball team rebounded from its worst loss of the season to pull out a 12-4 victory over Cardinal Stritch University in the Pirates' final non-conference game of the season on Wednesday (Mar. 19) in Georgetown, TX. Sophomore John Wooten (Columbus, TX/Columbus HS) extended his current hitting streak to 13 games and nine different players collected hits in the win. The game remained scoreless through three innings and the Wolves struck first with a single run in the top of the fourth. The Pirates responded in the bottom of the inning with an RBI triple from Jamie Herrmann (Houston, TX/Westside HS), an RBI double from Mark Noggle (Houston, TX/Clear Lake HS), an RBI groundout from Zach Copeland (Dallas, TX/W.T. White HS) and an RBI single from Brent McMullen (Irving, TX/Nimitz HS) for a 4-1 lead. CSU added a pair of runs in the fifth and then another in the sixth to tie the game through five and a half innings. A pair of doubles and an RBI groundout in the bottom of the sixth gave the Pirates a two-run lead they would not relinquish. Sophomore Todd Boone (Huntsville, TX/Huntsville HS) hit his second double in the seventh to score two runs and make the score 8-4. SU then added four more runs in the eighth for a final score of 12-4. Wooten was 1-4 in the game but it was his 13th-straight game with a hit. He also drew one walk and drove in one run. Boone recorded a hit in every at bat, collecting three hits in three trips to the plate. He recorded two doubles, drove in three and scored once while raising his batting average to .349 on the year. Noggle, a junior, had his best game of the season by recording three hits in five at bats. He hit his first double of the season and scored three runs along with one run batted in. Herrmann and Michael Murphy (Houston, TX/Austin HS) each had two hits in the game. Sophomore Robert Icenogle (Austin, TX/Westlake HS) started for the Pirates and threw three innings without allowing a hit but did not factor in to the decision. Joe Lange (Houston, TX/Lamar HS) earned the win in relief for the Bucs with 1.1 innings of scoreless ball. He struck out two and allowed one hit in evening his record at 2-2. The Pirates close out their non-conference slate with a 10-12 record while Cardinal Stritch remains winless at 0-12. Southwestern travels to San Antonio, TX for four games from Thursday (Mar. 20) through Saturday (Mar. 22) with Trinity University.
