Texas Wesleyan 15, Southwestern 4

Southwestern fell behind 1-0 after the top of the first but had an answer as sophomore John Wooten (Columbus, TX/Columbus HS) drove a two-out triple down the right field line to score a pair of runs and give SU a 2-1 lead. The score remained 2-1 until the fifth when the Rams put four runs on the board.

Landon Durham (Pearland, TX/Pearland HS) led off the bottom half of the fifth with a triple and later scored on a Richard Falcone (Houston, TX/Westside HS) single. With the score 5-3, the Pirates allowed five runs in the sixth and then five more in the seventh for a 15-3 deficit. Robert Icenogle (Austin, TX/Westlake HS) drove in one more run in the bottom of the inning for the 15-4 final.

Icenogle was 3-4 in the game with a double and one run batted in. Wooten's triple was his fourth of the season as he went one for two in the game. Ricky Gomez (New Braunfels, TX/Howard Payne University) was the only other Pirates with multiple hits as he went 2-2.

Junior Eric Gonzales (Austin, TX/Bowie HS) suffered the loss for Southwestern, allowing five earned runs in five innings pitched. He struck out three, walked three and gave up seven hits. He is now 1-2 on the season.

Texas Wesleyan 16, Southwestern 9

In game two, SU struck first with three runs in the bottom of the second. Senior Zach Copeland (Dallas, TX/W.T. White HS) drove in a run with a single while Gomez scored on a passed ball and Copeland scored on a wild pitch. The third inning is when things fell apart for Southwestern as TWU put up seven runs in the inning. The Rams added three in the fourth and four in the fifth for a 14-3 lead through five.

The Pirate offense woke up in the sixth as the Pirates scored five runs on five hits to pull within six. Texas Wesleyan added a pair in the seventh, putting SU down by eight. Gonzales drove in a run with a single in the seventh for a final score of 16-9.

Copeland had two hits in three at bats, scoring twice and driving in two runs. First-year catcher Nick Ashford (Red Oak, TX/Red Oak HS) was 2-2 in the game. Wooten scored twice and drove in one.

The loss went to first-year Kyle Belski (Missouri City, TX/Dulles HS) as he lasted three innings. The tall righty gave up eight hits and seven earned runs while striking out four and walking just one. He falls to 0-3 for the year.

On the season, the Pirates are now 7-9 while Texas Wesleyan improves to 11-7.

Southwestern's next games are on the road as they travel to Abilene, TX for three games with McMurry University, the University of Texas-Dallas and Marietta College on Monday (Mar. 11) and Tuesday (Mar. 12).
