The Southwestern University women's cross country team placed seventh out of 18 teams while the Pirate men took 11th out of 12 teams on Saturday (Sept. 29) in Memphis, TN. Sophomore Tami Warner (Dale, TX/Lockhart HS) was the Pirates' top finisher as she took 20th place with a time of 20:29. Following Warner were Jessica Ratcliffe (Coppell, TX/Coppell HS) in 23rd and Karin Arnhamn (Manor, TX/Elgin HS) in 26th. Junior Kristin Lahaie (Cypress, TX/St. Pius X HS) finished 40th overall and Ursula James came in seven spots back in 47th. In 68th was Elly Martinez (Lockhart, TX/Lockhart HS) and then first-year Lili McEntire (Smithville, TX/Smithville HS) in 72nd. Angela Anderson (Fort Hood, TX/Central Texas College) was two spots behind McEntire while Kelly Parmet (Bellaire, TX/Bellaire HS) placed 85th. SU placed seventh with a team score of 152, one point behind NCAA Division I Arkansas State University. Birmingham-Southern College was the race with a score of 79, followed by Rhodes (87), then the University of Memphis (96), Southern Arkansas University (115) and Greenville College (138) rounded out the top-five. The Pirates finished ahead of two Division I teams as well as a pair of Division II programs. In the men's race, sophomore transfer Josh Gideon (Mesquite, TX/McMurry University) finished the race in 28:32 for a 43rd place finish. Ben Sloan (Spartanburg, SC/Dorman HS) and Addison English (Keller, TX/Keller HS) ran together and finished 49th and 50th with times of 28:54 and 28:55, respectively. English improved on his time from the last race by 45 seconds. Allen Smith (Dallas, TX/Shelton School) improved on his time from last race by more than two minutes with a 29:03. David Pruit (Grapevine, TX/Cistercian Preparatory) and Matthew Broussard (College Station, TX/A&M Consolidated HS) both improved greatly on their last race, running a 29:32 and 29:33. Sebastian Winkler (Corpus Christi, TX/Incarnate Word Academy) finished 68th while Shug Evans (Cedar Park, TX/University of North Texas) took 83rd and Eric Sterner (San Antonio, TX/Central Catholic Marianist HS) finished 97th. The team finished 11th with a team score of 241. The University of Texas at Tyler won the race with a score of 42, followed by Rhodes (83), Birmingham-Southern (93), the Arkten Track Club (116) and the University of Memphis (122). The Pirates' next race will be on Saturday (Oct. 13) in Seguin, TX at the Texas Lutheran Cross Country Invitational.
