The SU women's cross country team finished in second while the men took fourth at the Texas State Division III Cross Country Championships held in Abilene, TX on Saturday (Sept. 22). Sophomore Tami Warner (Dale, TX/Lockhart HS) and Senior Jessica Ratcliffe (Coppell, TX/Coppell HS) finished within seconds of one another with Warner placing 13th and Ratcliffe 14th. They finished in 25:56 and 25:59, respectively. Karin Arnhamn (Manor, TX/Elgin HS) crossed the finish line in 26:04, good for 16th place. Junior Kristin Lahaie (Cypress, TX/St. Pius X HS) also finished in under 27 minutes, posting a time of 26:43 and finishing 22nd. First-year Ursula James (Sugarland, TX/Elkins HS) ran a time of 27:14 while Elly Martinez (Lockhart, TX/Lockhart HS) posted a time of 27:56. Kelly Parmet (Bellaire, TX/Bellaire HS) finished in 28:23, followed by Lili McEntire (Smithville, TX/Smithville HS) with a time of 28:26 and Angela Anderson (Fort Hood, TX/Central Texas College) with 28:36. The women's race was won by Trinity University with 17 points while SU had the second-best total of 76 points. McMurry University was third followed by Texas Lutheran with the University of Texas at Tyler rounding out the top-five. In the men's race, the top time for the Pirates came from sophomore transfer Josh Gideon (Mesquite, TX/McMurry University) with a time of 28:30. Junior Ben Sloan (Spartanburg, SC/Dorman HS) was next, recording a time of 29:23, followed by Addison English (Keller, TX/Keller HS) with a 29:42. Sophomore David Pruit (Grapevine, TX/Cistercian Preparatory) posted a 30:08 with Sebastian Winkler (Corpus Christi, TX/Incarnate Word Academy) right behind him with a 30:12. Allen Smith (Dallas, TX) ran the race in 31:11 while Matthew Broussard (College Station, TX/A&M Consolidated HS) did it in 31:24. Sophomore Shug Evans (Cedar Park, TX/University of North Texas) posted a time of 31:53, followed by Eric Sterner (San Antonio, TX/Central Catholic Marianist HS) who finished in 33:28, Ted Wilson (Clyde, TX/Clyde HS) with a 35:03 and Brian Schaefer (Spring, TX/Klein HS) with a 35:56. UT-Tyler won the race with 39 points, closely followed by Trinity with 43, then McMurry, Southwestern with 114 points and Sul Ross State University took fifth. Next Saturday (Sept. 29) the Pirate cross country teams will travel Memphis, TN for the Rhodes College Cross Country Invitational.
