The Southwestern University men's and women's track and field teams took on NCAA Division II and III competition at the McMurry Relays in Abilene, TX on Thursday (Apr. 5). Junior Mike Hanschen (Austin, TX/Austin HS) improved his personal best time in the 200 meter dash with a time of 22.66, good for fourth place. In the 100 meter dash, he took ninth with a time of 11.41. He also placed fifth in the long jump, recording a jump of 6.32 meters. Brennan Peel (Milano, TX/Milano HS) ran the 400 meter hurdles in 1:01.37 for fifth place. In the 110 meter hurdles, first-year Avery Sheppard (Cuero, TX/Cuero HS) placed seventh with a time of 16.20. Preston Hollis (Austin, TX/McCallum HS) finished seventh in the 800 meter dash, crossing the finish line in 2:03.35. LaToya Alexander (San Antonio, TX/Communications Arts HS) improved upon her recent school record in the shot put with a throw of 28' 7.5" The sophomore placed 14th in the event. Pirate runners Tami Warner (Dale, TX/Lockhart HS), Kristin Lahaie (Cypress, TX/St. Pius X HS) and Catherine Cunningham (Friendswood, TX/Friendswood HS) placed second, third and fourth in the 800 meter dash. Junior Karin Arnhamn (Manor, TX/Elgin HS) placed second in the 400 meter hurdles, finishing in 1:08.79. In the 1500 meters, senior Mallory Bird (San Antonio, TX/Reagan HS) recorded a time of 5:44.75 for seventh place. The women's team ended the meet with 37 points in sixth place, seven points behind Eastern New Mexico University. Abilene Christian University won the women's side with 160 points and the ACU men won with 151 points. The SU men finished with 22 points in 10th place. The Pirates have one more meet before the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference championships, the David Noble Relays hosted by Angelo State University in San Angelo, TX on Saturday (Apr. 14).
