Southwestern Track Strong at Bayou Classic against Division I Competition

The SU men's and women's track and field teams took on a field made up mostly of NCAA Division I teams on Saturday (Mar. 31) in Houston, TX at the Rice University Victor Lopez Bayou Classic meet that was delayed due to strong thunderstorms.

The top performer for the Pirates was junior Mike Hanschen (Austin, TX/Austin HS) who had three top-ten finishes. He recorded a personal best time of 22.77 in the 200 meter dash, good for seventh place. In the long jump, he placed sixth with a distance of 6.26 meters and ran the 100 meter dash in 11.33 for ninth place.

Preston Hollis (Austin, TX/McCallum HS) finished two spots behind Hanschen in the 100 meters with a personal best time of 11.48. He also took 13th in the 400 meter dash with a time of 51.95. Senior Jameson Otto (Carrollton, TX/Creekview HS) ran a season-best 16:24.75 in the 5,000 meters.

Southwestern had four women run in the 800 meters with Tami Warner (Dale, TX/Lockhart HS) taking 27th with a time of 2:28.33 and Laura Kromann (Austin, TX/Bowie HS) recording a personal best time of 2:32.92 for 30th place. Sophomore Kristin Lahaie (Cypress, TX/St. Pius X HS) finished 31st, running a season best 2:32.98 while Sherry Lewis (Horseshoe Bay, TX) ran a personal best 2:58.64 for 37th overall.

Karin Arnhamn (Manor, TX/Elgin HS) also posted a season best time of 1:09.25 for 12th place. The 4x400 relay team of Arnhamn, Lahaie, Kromann and Warner took eighth, crossing the finish line in 4:24.88.

The SU track teams will be in action again on Thursday (Apr. 5) when they travel to Abilene, TX for the McMurry Relays.
