Men's 4x100 Sets New Program Record at Victor Lopez Invitational

The SU men's 4x100 meter relay team of Preston Hollis (Austin, TX/McCallum HS), Chris Norris (Katy, TX/Katy HS), Scott Smith (Houston, TX/Jersey Village HS) and Mike Hanschen (Austin, TX/Austin HS) set a new Southwestern record with a time of 42.65 on Saturday (Mar. 29) in Houston, TX at the Rice University Victor Lopez Invitational.

The 4x100 team finished sixth behind only NCAA Division I teams and finished ahead of Division I Harvard, Division II Incarnate Word, Division III Trinity and Division III Oberlin. Sophomore Avery Sheppard (Cuero, TX/Cuero HS) ran the 110 meter hurdles in 15.51 for seventh place, ahead of multiple D-I runners.

In the 4x400 meter relay, the SU A team consisting of Smith, Sheppard, Hollis and Hanschen ran a season-best time of 3:24.19 for eighth place. Three runners posted personal-best times in the 200 meter dash with Smith coming in at 23.60, Chase Pipkin (San Antonio, TX/Alamo Heights HS) at 23.99 and Troy Hutchens (Stillwater, OK/Stillwater HS) at 24.00. Hanschen placed 11th in the 100 meter dash with a time of 11.16.

Hutchens also recorded a personal-best in the 400 meter dash, finishing in 52.67 while Hollis came in with a time of 53.21. Addison English (Keller, TX/Keller HS) recorded a personal-best time of 2:05.36 in the 800 meters along with Sebastian Winkler (Corpus Christi, TX/Incarnate Word Academy) who ran the race in 2:09.55 for a personal-best. Matthew Broussard (College Station, TX/A&M Consolidated HS) finished in 2:06.32 while Allen Smith (Dallas, TX/Shelton School) posted a time of 2:09.00.

English had another personal-best in the 1,500 meters, crossing the finish line in 4:20.77 and Broussard had a personal-best in the same race with a 4:26.62 mark. Winkler finished right behind Broussard in 4:26.82. Senior Eric Sterner (San Antonio, TX/Central Catholic Marianist HS) posted a personal-best 17:42.54 in the 5,000 meters and Allen Smith ran the 10,000 meters in 35:28.31, also a personal-best. Josh Gideon (Mesquite, TX/McMurry University) finished the 3,000 meter steeplechase in 10:46.80.

LaToya Alexander (San Antonio, TX/Communication Arts HS) recorded a season-best distance of 9.81 meters in the shot put and finished 16th. The 4x400 relay team of Kristin Lahaie (Cypress, TX/St. Pius X HS), Tami Warner (Dale, TX/Lockhart HS), Carol Wiesner (Omaha, NE/Millard West HS) and Dianna Urrego (Houston, TX/St. Agnes Academy) posted a season-best time of 4:30.65.

The Pirates got a season-best time of 2:25.60 from Warner in the 800 meters while Lahaie ran a personal-best 2:27.02 in the race. Also in the 800, Laura Kromann (Austin, TX/Bowie HS) finished in 2:28.75 for a season-best and Lili McEntire (Smithville, TX/Smithville HS) also had a season-best time at 2:48.90. In the 1,500 meter run, Warner posted a season-best 5:01.37, Lahaie ran a personal-best 5:10.08 and McEntire a season-best 5:43.20.

Wiesner finished the 200 meter dash in 31.74. Wiesner and Urrego finished back to back in the 400 meter dash with times of 1:11.25 and 1:12.79, respectively.

The next meet of the year is the Texas Relays on Friday (Apr. 4) and Saturday (Apr. 5) in Austin, TX with Norris and Hanschen running in the 100 meter dash and Sheppard will be in the 110 meter hurdles.
