The Southwestern University men's and women's track & field teams competed in their first meet of the season on Saturday (Feb. 24) in San Antonio, TX at the Trinity University Invitational. First-year Tami Warner (Dale, TX/Lockhart HS) placed second in the 800 meters with a time of 2:27.37 at her first-ever collegiate track meet. The second place showing was the top finish for an SU athlete at the meet. Junior Karin Arnhamn (Manor, TX/Elgin HS) recorded a time of 1:11.08 in the 400 meter hurdles, good for third place. Arnhamn and Warner were also part of a 4x400 meter relay team, along with first-year Laura Kromann (Austin, TX/Bowie HS) and sophomore Kristin Lahaie (Cypress, TX/St. Pius X HS), that finished in 4:25.69 for fifth. Senior Aaron Contreras (Brownsville, TX/St. Joseph's Academy) was the top finisher for the men, placing fourth in the 1,500 meters with a time of 4:14.61. Fellow senior Jameson Otto (Carrollton, TX/Creekview HS) ran the 3,000 meter steeplechase in 10:33.60 which gave him a fifth place finish. The 4x400 meter relay team of Brennan Peel (Milano, TX/Milano HS), Avery, Preston Hollis (Austin, TX/McCallum HS) and Michael Maine (Mesquite, TX/Mesquite HS) had the top performance from a Division III team at the meet, recording a time of 3:30.32 for fourth place. Peel, Mike Hanschen (Austin, TX/Austin HS), Maine and Hollis took fourth in the 4x100 relay, finishing in 45.10. First-year Avery Sheppard (Cuero, TX/Cuero HS) placed fifth in the 110 hurdles, crossing the finish line in 16.10. Peel also posted a personal best time of 1:01.58 in the 400 hurdles. The track teams compete again on Friday (Mar. 2) at the Cap Shelton Relays hosted by Howard Payne University in Brownwood, TX. SU Sports Information |
