Women Set to Play for Fifth, Men Take Ninth

The Southwestern University women's tennis team defeated Centre College on Saturday (Apr. 26) and is in position to place as high as fifth at the SCAC Championships in Greencastle, IN while the men won both of their matches on the day to take ninth place.

Southwestern Women 5, Centre Women 4

The duo of Mary Pennington (San Antonio, TX/Churchill HS) and Laura Evanoff (Breckenridge, TX/Breckenridge HS) picked up the Pirates only point in doubles play as they won their match 8-4. In the number three doubles match, Sara Fitzsimmons (Garland, TX/Garland HS) and Kelly Finn (Wichita Falls, TX/Burkburnett HS) lost a heartbreaker 9-7.

In singles, Leslie Smith (Temple, TX/Temple HS) won the first flight handily 6-1, 6-2. Pennington was victorious in her match by a tally of 4-6, 6-0, 6-1. Southwestern's other two points came from Lali Satyavada (Midland, TX/Lee HS) in a 6-2, 6-1 win and Finn who was 6-2, 7-5.

Southwestern Men 8, Austin College Men 1

In the men's first match of the day they dominated Austin College. In doubles, CJ Esquivel (Houston, TX/Lamar Consolidated) and D'Artagnan Bebel (The Woodlands, TX/Oak Ridge HS) 8-6 while Dan Otto (Austin, TX/Lake Forest College) and Michael Party (Midland, TX/Florida Tech) won by the same score. In the third flight, Charles Prince (Port Arthur, TX/Memorial HS) and Alex Jansen (Austin, TX/Anderson HS) won 8-1.

In singles, Otto won 6-2, 6-1 while Party pulled out his match 7-5, 6-3. Jansen blanked his opponent in the sixth flight 6-0, 6-0. Bebel was victorious in a 6-3, 6-2 decision while Prince won his match 6-2, 6-3.

Southwestern Men 7, Centre Men 2

In the ninth place match, the Pirates once again took all three doubles points. Esquivel and Bebel won 8-4 as did the duo of Prince and Jansen. In the second flight, Otto and Jansen won 8-2.

In number three singles, Party came up with a 6-3, 6-0 win. Bebel won his match 6-2, 6-2 and Prince pulled out a 6-2, 6-4 victory. Jansen won the number six singles match by a score of 6-2, 6-1.

The women take on Colorado College at 11:00 am in Greencastle at DePauw University.
