On the final weekend of play before the SCAC Championships in San Antonio, TX, the Southwestern University men's and women's tennis teams both posted 1-2 records against fellow SCAC schools. Trinity Men 8, Southwestern Men 1 In the men's first match against Trinity University, the Pirates managed just a single point as sophomore Charles Prince (Port Arthur, TX/Memorial HS) earned a 6-3, 2-6, 10-8 victory in the fifth flight singles match. Trinity jumped ahead with all three doubles points and took the rest of the singles matches in two sets. Trinity Women 8, Southwestern Women 1 Senior Laura Evanoff (Breckenridge, TX/Breckenridge HS) was the sole winner for the women, taking the number three singles match in three sets 6-4, 1-6, 10-4. Evanoff and Mary Pennington (San Antonio, TX/Churchill HS) dropped their doubles match 8-4. Southwestern Men 9, Austin College Men 0 Against the Kangaroos, the men got off to a good start with all three doubles points. Prince and Alex Jansen (Austin, TX/Anderson HS) won handily, 8-1 while Nick Parker (Wharton, TX/Wharton HS) and CJ Esquivel (Houston, TX/Lamar Consolidated HS) pulled out the win in the first flight by a score of 8-5. In the second flight, Dan Otto (Austin, TX/Lake Forest College) and Michael Party (Midland, TX/Florida Tech) won a hard-fought match, 9-8. In singles, Parker won 6-3, 6-0 and Esquivel won 6-4, 6-1. Jansen was victorious in number three singles 6-1, 6-4. Otto won the fourth flight and Prince was victorious in the fifth. First-year D'Artagnan Bebel (The Woodlands, TX/Oak Ridge HS) won the sixth flight without losing a game, 6-0, 6-0. Southwestern Women 5, Austin College Women 4 The Pirate women picked up their win on the weekend against the Roos, taking two out of three in doubles. The duo of Pennington and Evanoff, along with the team of Kelly Finn (Wichita Falls, TX/Burkburnett HS) and Sara Fitzsimmons (Garland, TX/Garland HS), won their matches 8-4. Leslie Smith (Temple, TX/Temple HS) and Emily Gutzmer (Austin, TX/Anderson HS) came up short in an 8-6 loss. Singles were split 3-3 between the two teams. Pennington was a winner in the number two singles, 6-1, 6-3. First-year Charlotte Huskey (DeLand, FL/DeLand HS) was victorious in two sets6-2, 6-0. Lali Satyavada (Midland, TX/Lee HS) won the sixth flight 6-1, 6-0. Colorado College Men 5, Southwestern Men 4 In the match with the Tigers, the men took two points in doubles play. Otto and Party were 9-7 winners in the second flight while Prince and Jansen won 8-3. The duo of Parker and Esquivel were edged 8-5. In singles, Prince won again in the number five spot 6-3, 6-1 while Bebel took his match 6-4, 6-3. Parker, in the first flight, fell in three sets 0-6, 6-4, 6-1. Colorado College Women 5, Southwestern Women 4 In the women's match with Colorado, it was the Tigers who took two of three in doubles. Finn and Fitzsmmons were the SU winners in doubles, taking the number three match 8-6. Smith picked up her only win of the weekend in the first flight 6-2, 6-4. Huskey won again, this time in three, 4-6, 6-0, 7-6. Satyavada picked up the point in number six singles 6-1, 6-0. Evanoff lost a heartbreaker in her match, falling 4-6, 6-2, 7-6. The top performance on the weekend for the men came from Prince who was 3-0 in singles and 2-1 in doubles play. For the women, Satyavada was 2-0 in singles play. The Pirates travel to Greencastle, IN this week for the SCAC Championships beginning on Friday (Apr. 25) with the men and women both facing off against Millsaps College at 8:00 am.
