This past weekend, the SU women's tennis team moved to 8-6 on the season while the men came out of play against Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference teams with a record of 3-11. Birmingham-Southern Men 7, Southwestern Men 2 The men faced Birmingham-Southern College on Friday (Apr. 11) and fell 7-2. The Pirates got their points in singles play as first-year D'Artagnan Bebel (The Woodlands, TX/Oak Ridge HS) won the fourth flight 6-3, 1-6, 10-3. Sophomore Charles Prince (Port Arthur, TX/Memorial HS) won in the five spot 6-3, 6-2. Bebel and Prince also made their doubles match close, falling 8-5. Birmingham-Southern Women 9, Southwestern Women 0 For the women, the Pirates fell behind 3-0 through doubles and never recovered. The number one doubles team of Leslie Smith (Temple, TX/Temple HS) and Emily Gutzmer (Austin, TX/Anderson HS) fell 8-6 and the number two team of Mary Pennington (San Antonio, TX/Churchill HS) and Laura Evanoff (Breckenridge, TX/Breckenridge HS) lost 8-5. In singles, not a single match went to three sets. Oglethorpe Men 7, Southwestern Men 2 Prince picked up another win on Saturday (Apr. 12) as the Pirates played Oglethorpe University. Prince won the fourth flight 7-6, 6-0. Junior Michael Party (Midland, TX/Florida Tech) picked up the other point for SU as he won in the number six singles 6-2, 6-3. In doubles, all three Pirate duos lost either 8-5 or 8-6. Southwestern Women 9, Oglethorpe Women 0 Against the Stormy Petrels, SU earned three points right off the bat in doubles play. Smith and Gutzmer won 8-0 while the team of Evanoff and Pennington won 8-2. The number three doubles pairing of first-years Kelly Finn (Wichita Falls, TX/Burkburnett HS) and Sara Fitzsimmons (Garland, TX/Garland HS) won their match 8-1. The women dominated singles as well, led by Smith in the number one slot and winning 6-2, 6-1. Pennington and Evanoff swept the second and third spots 6-0, 6-0 while sophomore Allison Noblitt (Lake Jackson, TX/Brazoswood HS) won the fourth flight 6-4, 6-3. Charlotte Huskey (DeLand, FL/DeLand HS) blanked her opponent 6-0, 6-0 and Lali Satyavada (Midland, TX/Lee HS) won 6-0, 6-1. Millsaps Men 5, Southwestern Men 4 Later in the day against Millsaps College, the men lost a tight one. The Pirates went ahead 2-1 after doubles play with the duo of Nick Parker (Wharton, TX/Wharton HS) and CJ Esquivel (Houston, TX/Lamar Consolidated HS) winning the first flight 8-5. In the third spot, Prince and Alex Jansen (Austin, TX/Anderson HS) pulled out the 9-7 victory. Bebel earned another win in singles play, ousting his opponent in the number four spot 6-4, 6-0. Party won his second match of the day, taking the sixth flight 7-6, 3-4 before his opponent retired. The Pirate men and women head to San Antonio, TX next weekend for three matches against Trinity University, Austin College and Colorado College.
