Pirate Netters Earn Victory over Texas Lutheran

The SU men's and women's tennis teams both picked up wins on Wednesday (Mar. 26) against the Texas Lutheran University Bulldogs in Georgetown, TX.

Southwestern Women 7, Texas Lutheran Women 2

Senior Leslie Smith (Temple, TX/Temple HS) and sophomore Emily Gutzmer (Austin, TX/Anderson HS) blanked their opponents in the number one doubles match, 8-0. In the second flight, Sara Fitzsimmons (Garland, TX/Garland HS) and Kelly Finn (Wichita Falls, TX/Burkburnett HS) won 8-2 and the third match went to SU by default.

In singles, senior Laura Evanoff (Breckenridge, TX/Breckenridge HS) won in three sets, 3-6, 7-5, 10-3. The number two match went to Allison Noblitt (Lake Jackson, TX/Brazoswood HS) 6-1, 6-4 while Charlotte Huskey (DeLand, FL/DeLand HS) won the third flight 6-0, 6-0. The final point for the Pirates came by default. Brittany Fondren (Houston, TX/St. John's HS) lost in two sets and Katie Cam (Carrollton, TX/Mt. Vernon HS) fell in three.

Southwestern Men 6, Texas Lutheran Men 3

In men's action, SU picked up two points in doubles with top singles team Nick Parker (Wharton, TX/Wharton HS) and CJ Esquivel (Houston, TX/Lamar Consolidated HS) grinding out an 8-6 win. Charles Prince (Port Arthur, TX/Memorial HS) and D'Artagnan Bebel (The Woodlands, TX/Oak Ridge HS) were victorious in their match, 8-3. Michael Party (Midland, TX/Florida Tech) and Dan Otto (Austin, TX/Lake Forest College) lost 8-5.

Prince won his number three singles match in three sets 4-6, 6-0, 6-1 and Alex Jansen (Austin, TX/Anderson HS) pulled out the win in the fourth flight 6-2, 0-6, 6-2. Bebel also picked up his second point of the match with a 7-6, 6-0 victory. Esquivel defeated his opponent 6-2, 6-0 in the sixth flight. The two losses for the Pirates came in the top two singles matches.

The wins improve the women's record to 5-5 and the men's to 2-7. It was the second time this season that both teams have earned wins against a common opponent.

The Pirates next host Temple College in Georgetown on Friday (Mar. 28) with the match set to begin at 3:00 pm.
