In Kerrville, TX on Wednesday (Mar. 25), the Southwestern University women's tennis team defeated Schreiner University 8-1 and the men lost to the Mountaineers 6-3. Southwestern Women 8, Schreiner Women 1 The Pirate women got off to a good start against Schreiner by taking all three doubles points. The duo of Laura Evanoff (Breckenridge, TX/Breckenridge HS) and Emily Gutzmer (Austin, TX/Anderson HS) pulled out an 8-6 win. In the second flight, Kelly Finn (Wichita Falls, TX/Burkburnett HS) and Sara Fitzsimmons (Garland, TX/Garland HS) won handily, 8-1. The third flight was won by default. In singles, Gutzmer won a hard-fought first flight match 6-4, 4-6, 6-2 while Finn earned a 6-3, 6-1 victory. Lali Satyavada (Midland, TX/Lee HS) won 1-6, 7-5, 10-8 and Fitzsimmons came out on top 6-2, 6-2. Evanoff won her match by default and first-year Katie Cam (Carrollton, TX/Mt. Vernon HS) dropped her match by a score of 6-2, 6-2. Schreiner Men 6, Southwestern Men 3 The men's team started out completely opposite of the women, losing all three doubles points and falling in an 0-3 hole. The pairing of Charles Prince (Port Arthur, TX/Memorial HS) and D'Artagnan Bebel (The Woodlands, TX/Oak Ridge HS) lost by an 8-5 margin, the same as teammates Michael Party (Midland, TX/Florida Tech) and Casey Guinn (Canyon, TX/Canyon HS). CJ Esquivel (Houston, TX/Lamar Consolidated HS) and Alex Jansen (Austin, TX/Anderson HS) fell 8-1. Prince picked up a point for SU with a 7-5, 6-1 win in the second flight. Bebel also won his singles match with little trouble, 6-1, 6-3. The Pirates' final point went to junior Josh Spencer (Huntsville, TX/Huntsville HS) who pulled out a 6-4, 6-4 victory. In the first flight, Party took his match to three sets but ultimately lost 5-7, 6-0, 6-2. The women's team improved its season record to 4-5 while the men fell to 1-7. The Pirates will host Texas Lutheran on Wednesday (Mar. 26) at 2:00 pm in Georgetown, TX.
