Pirate Swimmers Hold Steady with Quality Times at SCAC Championship

The Southwestern University men's and women's swimming and diving teams continued to swim well on Friday (Feb. 15) at the SCAC Championship meet being held in Southlake, TX as the two teams sit in eighth and fifth places.

First-year Bailey Thompson (Garland, TX/Garland HS) had the top finish of the game for the Bucs as she took second place in the 100 yard backstroke with a time of 1:00.59, just 0.3 seconds behind DePauw's Lindsay Riggs. Thompson also swam on the 200 yard medley relay team along with Alana Bergfield (Dhahran, Saudi Arabia/The Cranbrook School), Sam Kessler (Austin, TX/Westwood HS) and Jessie Carrier (Victoria, TX/St. Joseph HS). The team finished the race in 1:53.48, good for fourth place.

Bergfield posted a sixth-place finish in the 100 yard breaststroke, recording a time of 1:09.49. First-year Kassie Krusely (Round Rock, TX/Round Rock HS) swam the race in 1:13.78 to place 11th. Kessler, Michelle Comerota (Missouri City, TX/Hightower HS), Thompson and Bergfield combined to swim the 800 yard freestyle relay in 8:20.08 to take fifth. Kessler and Carrier finished 10th and 13th, respectively, in the 100 yard butterfly.

John Prater (Austin, TX/Star Charter Academy), Dustin McCammon (San Antonio, TX/Judson HS), Rit Fetherston (Tempe, AZ/Marcos De Niza HS) and Taylor Steele (Houston, TX/Cypress Ridge HS) finished the 800 yard freestyle relay with a time of 7:39.40 to take eighth place. Prater, a first-year, had the best individual finish of the day by placing ninth in the 100 yard breaststroke with a time of 1:02.09. McCammon posted a time of 57.56 in the 100 yard backstroke for a 10th-place finish. The Pirate men also got a 12-place showing in the 200 yard medley relay.

The women still reside in fifth place with 294.5 points and are 61.5 points behind fourth place Rhodes College. Trinity University leads the women with 613.5 total points. On the men's side, DePauw University leads with 622.5 points while the Pirates sit in eighth with 139 points.

The meet concludes on Saturday (Feb. 16) with 13 scheduled events.
