Pirate Men Swim to First Dual Meet Win in Four Years

The Southwestern men's swimming team won a dual meet for the first time in four years on Saturday (Feb. 2) as they defeated Austin College 92-70 and the women also won by a score of 126-79.

First-year John Prater (Austin, TX/Star Charter Academy) picked up three wins, in the 50 freestyle (23.86), the 100 freestyle (52.74) and the 500 freestyle (5:48.91). Dustin McCammon (San Antonio, TX/Judson HS) swam the 200 IM in 2:11.27 and the 100 backstroke in 59.28 for a pair of victories.

Taylor Steele (Houston, TX/Cypress Ridge HS) earned the victory in the 200 freestyle and Jon LaRochelle (Angleton, TX/Milton Academy) recorded a time of 1:09.25 in the 100 breaststroke.

Senior Kyle Marshall (Port Lavaca, TX/Calhoun HS) was swimming the last meet of his collegiate career before the conference meet and had a pair of second-place finishes along with a third-place finish.

Marshall said "It felt awesome to finally win a meet. We have worked very hard this year and each of us contributed. As the program continues to grow and advance, more wins will come our way. Winning the last regular meet of my collegiate career is a great way to end. I look forward to the SCAC Championships and watching this team over the next few years."

For the women, junior Jessie Carrier (Victoria, TX/St. Joseph HS) was a three-time winner. She swam to victories in the 50 freestyle, the 100 butterfy and as the second leg of the 200 freestyle relay team. Alana Bergfield (Dhahran, Saudi Arabia/The Cranbrook School) picked up wins in both the 200 IM and the 100 breaststroke as well as in the 200 freestyle relay.

Michelle Comerota (Missouri City, TX/Hightower HS) recorded a time of 2:16.04 in the 200 freestyle and 58.56 in the 100 freestyle for a pair of victories. Bailey Thompson (Garland, TX/Garland HS) won the 500 freestyle in 5:36.13 while Sam Kessler (Austin, TX/Westwood HS) posted a time of 11:32.49 in winning the 1,000 freestyle.

The Pirates will next wim at the SCAC Championships being held in Southlake, TX outside of Dallas from Feb. 15-16.
