SU Wins Majority of Events in Return to Action at Chapman

Returning to action after the winter break, the Southwestern University men's and women's swimming teams picked up a win and tie in Orange, CA against Chapman University on Sunday (Jan. 6).

The women won by a total of 119-74 and won eight of the 11 events. A pair of Pirate swimmers, Alana Bergfield (Dhahran, Saudi Arabia/The Cranbrook School) and Jessie Carrier (Victoria, TX/St. Joseph HS), both won three events. Bergfield picked up wins in the 200 IM, the 200 breaststroke and the medley relay. Carrier was also on the medley relay team while also picking up wins in the 50 and 100 freestyles.

First-year Sam Kessler (Austin, TX/Westwood HS) earned victories in the 200 and 500 freestyles while Michele Comerota (Missouri City, TX/Hightower HS) won the 1,000 freestyle.

On the men's side, the Pirates won six of 11 events and swam to a 87-87 tie. Taylor Steele (Houston, TX/Cypress Ridge HS) had a strong meet, winning both the 100 and 200 freestyles with two season-best times. First-year John Prater (Austin, TX/Star Charter Academy) posted three lifetime-best times and earned a win in the 500 freestyle.

First-year Dustin McCammon (San Antonio, TX/Judson HS) also posted a pair of season-bests, winning the 200 IM and the 200 backstroke. Jon LaRochelle (Angleton, TX/Milton Academy) won the 200 breaststroke.
