Senior soccer players Cory Fujimoto (San Antonio, TX/Reagan HS) and Amanda Gunzelman (Houston, TX/Cypress Springs HS) have been selected as the 2008 male and female Pirate Anchor award winners.
Fujimoto, a four-year starter for the men's soccer team, picked up the award on the men's side. He was a team captain for the 2007 men's soccer team and is a multiple time SCAC All-Academic qualifier. Also, in 2007, Fujimoto was named ESPN the Magazine First Team Academic All-District and was up for consideration for the Academic All-America team. He has been named to many Dean's Lists during his time at SU and has always displayed exemplary character. Fujimoto has completed his actuary exam and already has a job lined up for after graduation.
Gunzelman, a team captain for the women's team, was the female recipient for 2008. She also served as a team captain during her senior campaign and was named All-SCAC Third Team for the 2007 season. A Dean's List student, Gunzelman is a Psi Chi (National Psychology Honors Society) member as well as a member of Zeta Tau Alpha sorority. She is a student mentor at Southwestern and in 2005 received the First-Year Leadership award in 205. Gunzelman was also selected to the ESPN the Magazine Academic All-District Second Team in 2007.
The Anchor award is presented annually by the Student Athletic Advisory Committee (SAAC) to the male and female athlete who best display a number of traits that embody the spirit and character of the SU community. The winners are voted on by any members of the Southwestern student body, faculty and staff.
